NATO
Mongolia has been cooperating with NATO since early 1990s. Secretary of the National Security Council Mr. R.Bold, Foreign Minister N.Tuya, Prime Minister N.Enkhbayar, other high ranking Mongolian officials visited NATO HQs between 1998 and 2003 to hold talks on bilateral cooperation.
Though the Government of Mongolia included a special provision in its Action Plan for 2000-2004 to establish formal relationship with NATO in the framework of the Partnership for Peace program to cooperate in the field of peacekeeping, disaster management, environment and military training, participated in the “CentAsBat-2000” peacekeeping multinational exercise in Kazakhstan in 2000, the lack of consensus from the NATO allies prevented the development of relationship.
Since 2003 Mongolia contributed seven artillery METs to OEF in Afghanistan and sent two platoons to NATO led KFOR mission under Belgian command.
In recent years Mongolia has taken active efforts to formalize its relationship with NATO. With singing of Participation and Financial agreements by Ambassador of Mongolia to BELELUX A.Battur and NATO’s Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in March 2010 Mongolia was formally recognized as 45th troop contributing nation to ISAF. Defense Minister of Mongolia L. Bold visited NATO HQs in late March 2010 to hold high level talks at NATO and SHAPE and the Chief of the General Staff of Mongolian Armed forces Lieutenant General Ts.Byambajav attended the ISAF format CHODs meeting in May, 2010
At present Mongolia deployed a platoon for the base protection under German command in north Afghanistan and planning to have another platoon with Belgian and Luxembourg at Kabul International airport.
